Each and every shell is handcrafted one at a time in my shop located here in Wilmington, N.C. Most of the lumber used is cabinet/furniture grade lumber already nice and dry to around 7-8% moisture content. I have also used lumber from locally sourced fallen trees. I really like doing this for the fact that every piece of wood is known to come from the same tree.
The one off custom sets are always a challenge that pays huge dividends. Working with musicians to build a snare or set with the tonal qualities that matches their individual style is not always an easy feat. When it all comes together and they pick up a pair of sticks and play them for the first time, that's the pay off for me. Very few things in my career as a woodworker has come close to the satisfaction that I get from building these drums for great players to enjoy.
I of course want to build drums that inspire but it is my hope that the player and the builder will inspire each other.
